4:3 is the aspect ratio used for 35 mm films in the silent era and used today for film production under the name Super 35. (1)
Super 35 negatives can be used to produce high-quality releases in any aspect ratio, as the final frame will be extracted and converted from the larger full frame negative

In 2009, of the top 25 films according to box office:
8 shot Super35
1 shot Digital Camera
3 shot Panavision 35mm standard
7 shot a mix of digital and 35mm or S35
4 were digital movies (pixar, etc.)

However, the way the aspect ratio is created with these films is not in-camera, but rather by placing a cropping device, known as an aperture mask, over the film in the projector. What this means is that most films are shot in full screen format (often incorrectly referred to as 1.33:1 but actually 1.37:1 because of the sound tracks), but composed for 1.85:1 or 1.66:1 and cropped that way in projection.
